Before Starting the DC installation process you need to make sure the following points

You have installed Basic windows server 2003 installation

Make sure you have assigned a static ip address to your server

Now start DC and DNS Setup process

1. Go to Start–>All Programs–>Administrative Tools–>Manage Your Server

2. Select Add or remove a role and Domain Controller (Active Directory) as the role and click Next

3. Next window select the default option of “Domain Controller for a new domain” and click “Next”

4. Create a domain in a new forest, because it is the first DC, so keep that option selected

5. Give a full DNS name for the new domain. (i.e. PBO.com)

6. Give a NetBIOS name of the domain.

7. The next dialog suggests storing the AD database and log on separate hard disks and you can just leave the default settings.

8. Next Screen basically says that you will need a DNS server in order for everything to work the way we want it. We will install the DNS server on this machine or if you want you can installed else where select “Install and Configure…” and click next.

9. On the next window you need to select the permissions for win 2000 or win 2003 server if you have any NT4 select first option otherwise select second option and click next.

10 The restore mode password is the single password that all administrators hope to never use, however they should also never forget it because this is the single password that might save a failed server.click Next.

1. Install the Email Server

Start Manage Your Server by clicking Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Manage Your Server.

This will start the Configure Your Server Wizard. Read the text and make sure you have connected all the necessary cables and all the other things it says you should do before continuing.

Click next and select the server role and click next again. You will now specify the type of authentication and type the email domain name. And then next it and finish the wizard.

2. Configure the Email Server

Click Start, then run, and type p3server.msc

This will open up the POP3 Service. This is where you configure and manage the POP3 part of the mail server.

Click on <ComputerName> in the left pane

Click on Server Properties in the right pane

Fact Sheet:

The standard port for the POP3 protocol is 110. If you change this, make sure you notify all users so they can configure their email clients to use this other port. Also make sure you restart the POP3 service if you change this.

3. Create a mailbox

The Setup Wizard created a domain to us, so we do not need to create this manually. If you did not use Manage Your Server to install, add the domain manually be clicking the server name in the left pane and then click New domain in the right pane. Remember to set the properties before you add the domain.

Click on your domain in the left pane.

Click Add Mailbox in the right pane.

4. Configure the SMTP Server

Open Computer Management

Expand Services and Applications, expand Internet Information Service

Right click Default SMTP Virtual Server and click Properties

Click the Access tab

Click the Authentication button and make sure Anonymous Access and Integrated Windows Authentication is enabled.

Click the Relay button and make sure Allow all computers which successfully… is enabled and Only the list below is selected.

First of all, Authentication and Relay is not the same thing. We use the Authentication button to specify which authentications methods are allowed for users and other SMTP servers. So enabling Anonymous here is not a security issue, in fact, it’s required if we want our server to be able to receive emails from other servers on Internet (I doubt you want to tell all administrators of email servers on Internet how they should logon to yours). We also need Windows Authentication so the email clients can authenticate to the server and be able to relay (send emails).

As Relay Restrictions we selected Only the list below because we do not want to be used by spammers to send emails. But we never specified any computers. That is valid, because we want our clients to always use the username and password to authenticate, no matter where they are.

If you want users to only be allowed to relay if they are on a private network, then you can uncheck Windows Authentication as allowed authentication method, and specify the IP range for your network in the Relay Restrictions window.

5. Configure the email client

You can use a e mail client such as Outlook.

When it comes to technology the utmost important lesson I learned was that how perfect you keep your techno stuff, breakdowns are unavoidable. There is a solution for this, that is backup backup and backup………….. . Well the word I hate most is ‘Net Down’. Expect ‘Netdown’ for utmost stupid reasons. From incorrectly typed URL to real situations. So it is important to have backup ISP’s or sufficient bandwidth to expand the number of stations. If you are using public or static IP’s make sure to have extra IP’s in case one ISP goes down. Extra mouse, headsets, PC’s, switches, wireless routers are very crucial. Extra PC’s; just in case one PC breaks down or your system malfunctions. This is not that because you can not troubleshoot em, sometimes it takes time to troubleshoot systems so the best practice is to replace one another.

Make sure all the devices are plugged in and only swapping is required. One of the most important devices when it comes to a internet utilizing network is your router. Routers are very expensive devices, rarely breaks down. The second most important device is the switch. Make sure to have several backup switches.

In case you can also plugging your wireless router to a switch and enable internet connection to part of the LAN network. But still you will be using the available bandwidth but dynamic IP’s could be assigned. Having a DHCP server comes in handy, for example if an ISP is down you can automatically assign IP’s from an up and running ISP. Still dedicated lines are not 100% reliable. Ups and downs may occur time to time and therefore balancing the load is very important.

Backups are very important for servers which function 24*7. If you are having a domain server and if the domain server breaks down the whole network could break down.

You can use a process called load balancing to spread the application load across two or more servers. This prevents one server from becoming overloaded while another is loafing. Load balancing works on the principle that if a server is busy or unavailable, a client connection is routed to the next available server. Normally it takes about 5 seconds to identify the situation and about 10 seconds to connect. Another fault tolerant feature available in Windows 2003 is clustering. Clustering is an advanced feature that allows the workload to be switched over from one server to another, either manually, or because of a hardware or software failure.

I believe everything that Win 2003 server does can be done by Win Xp. {Professional}. Almost everything. I wanted to know whether creating a FTP server is possible.

For this I had to add some windows components. IIS is not installed as a default component. You can do this by:

Control Panel> Add/Remove programs > Click Add/Remove Windows components tab and tick IIS. Before you proceed make sure to click the detail tab and enable FTP services. The installation will ask for the XP CD.

You can use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Internet Information Services snap-in to configure the FTP service.

After the snap-in starts, expand the computer name, then expand FTP Sites. A Default FTP Site will have been added. Right-click Default FTP Site, then select Properties from the displayed context menu to set options such as Home Directory, accounts, and anonymous access. To stop the FTP service, right-click the FTP site and select Stop from the context menu; likewise, select Start from the context menu to restart the service.

The default FTP site is actually located in C:\Inetpub\ftproot. You can drop in some files and checkout this.

Now you will need a FTP client to access this directory. I used Filezilla. So now I have an up and running FTP server on your local computer. But I faced some problems, which I would like to share with you. If you can’t upload files and the client software gives a critical error message, make sure you enable read write and access. This can be done by right clicking on the virtual directory and going to properties.

The default configurations automatically enables anonymous access. This means than anyone who has your IP could access your files. Note that only the admin could make changes to your files.

Because FTP depends on Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), IIS and the FTP Service must be installed on the computer. IIS is a windows component. You can install IIS like adding any other windows component. (Add/Remove Windows Components).

Configure The FTP Service

// To configure the FTP Service to allow only anonymous connections, follow these steps:

Start Internet Information Services Manager or open the IIS snap-in.

Expand <var>Server_name</var>, where <var>Server_name</var> is the name of the server.

Expand FTP Sites

Right-click Default FTP Site, and then click Properties.

Click the Security Accounts tab.

Click to select the Allow Anonymous Connections check box (if it is not already selected), and then click to select the Allow only anonymous connections check box.

When you click to select the Allow only anonymous connections check box, you configure the FTP Service to allow only anonymous connections. Users cannot log on by using user names and passwords.

Click the Home Directory tab.

Click to select the Read and Log visits check boxes (if they are not already selected), and then click to clear the Write check box (if it is not already cleared).

Click OK.

Quit Internet Information Services Manager or close the IIS snap-in.

The FTP server is now configured to accept incoming FTP requests. Copy or move the files that you want to make available to the FTP publishing folder for access.

The default folder is <var>drive</var>:\Inetpub\Ftproot, where <var>drive</var> is the drive on which IIS is installed.

To have a good Voip connection the most important factor to consider is your internet connection. If you are using a dedicated line the ISP will definitely provide you with the promised bandwidth. But for Voip calls the bandwidth only is not enough.Taking one step up there are various properties of the connection that would affect the Voip calls. The main properties are; jitter, packet loss, download speed, upload speed and Quality of Service (QoS).

Jitter is the variation of time between packets arriving. This could be caused by network congestion, timing drift, or route changes. A jitter buffer can be used to handle jitter. Some of the causes could be electromagnetic interference (EMI) and crosstalk with other signals.

Qos is the ability of the ISP to provide a constant stream of data without fluctuations. This is very important for Voip, most of the ISP’s would ignore this factor. You may notice that the maximum download speed shown is more than the connection speed rated by your ISP. This is usually due to how your connection is regulated. For example, an ISP may supply a 10 Mbit connection by allowing 100 Mbit for 10ms, and pause for 90ms.
The higher the download speed, the better, but a quality connection will also demonstrate very little fluctuation in download speeds.

TCP pause graph: Data is sent across the Internet in “blocks”. Usually a connection will send a block of data and pause before sending the next. (This pause is known as the TCP pause.) If the pauses become excessive it means that the connection throughput is being degraded.
A good connection will have both a low TCP pause (less than 20 ms), and also demonstrate very little fluctuation in the TCP pause values. This in essence defines a quality of data as it defines how much of the test time was spent actually transmitting data versus being idle waiting for data to arrive.

Now you got your reasons to nail your ISP……..

First use a good software to do the online tests.

If your computer does not have wireless network support built in, plug your network adapter into your USB port, and place the antenna on top of your computer (in the case of a desktop computer), or insert the network adapter into an empty PC card slot (in the case of a laptop). Windows XP will automatically detect the new adapter, and may prompt you to insert the CD that came with your adapter. The on-screen instructions will guide you through the configuration process.

Follow these steps to connect your computer to your wireless network:

Right-click the wireless network icon in the lower-right corner of your screen, and then click View Available Wireless Networks. If you run into any problems, consult the documentation that came with your network adapter. Don’t be afraid to call their tech support.

The Wireless Network Connection window should appear and you should see your wireless network listed with the network name you chose. If you don’t see your network, click Refresh network list in the upper-left corner. Click your network, and then click Connect in the lower-right corner.

Windows XP prompts you to enter a key. Type the encryption key that you wrote down earlier in both the Network key and Confirm network key boxes, and then click Connect.

Windows XP will show its progress as it connects to your network. After you’re connected, you can now close the Wireless Network Connection window. You’re done.

Note: If the Wireless Network Connection window continues to show Acquiring Network Address, you may have mistyped the encryption key.
